Tips and Tricks
Grooming Tips:
- Microfiber cloths are great to give your horse a quick wipe over before entering the ring at a show, (Kellie Lehmann)
- Old blunt bot knives are handy tools to help get rid of the last shedding hairs,
- Make sure your horses hooves are completely dry before applying hoof black. Once you've put it on and it's dry, spray some human hair spray on top, it helps keep their hooves black for longer and makes them shiny too!
- Never apply show sheen to the saddle area, it causes your saddle to slip, not a great look hanging under your horses belly cantering around the ring :P
- A small amount of baby oil or Vaseline soothes freshly shaven muzzles and gives them a bit of shine, however be careful if your using it on a very hot day as if the oil heats up it can burn your horses face,
- A paste of talcum powder and water is great to paint on freshly washed white markings, paint it on and then bandage over until you leave for the show, simply brush it off and your horses legs will still be white!
- Instead of costly hoof oils that often dry your horses hooves out even more, overflow their water trough and stand them in the water for 10 minutes a day, or get them used to having their hooves in buckets and fill the buckets up with water. (If your horse gets spooked and your using buckets it could be dangerous so I wouldn't recommend doing all 4 hooves at once, 2 at a time would be safer)
Feeding Tips:
- Put your hay bales in large black plastic bags if you have to transport them in your car, no messy hay to clean up afterwards!
- Adding a small amount of vegetable oil into your horses feed is good for their hooves and coat, and its also great to help add weight onto those hard doers,
- If you have the storage space, buy your hay in bulk, it works out much cheaper as prices increase through winter - and some people are generous enough to give discounts on bulk purchases!
- Make sure you keep your horses dentist appointment up to date, the best feed in the world can't correct tooth problems,
